Google was close to buying a subscription-based streaming music service – either Spotify or Rhapsody, according to a source with knowledge of Google’s music plans.

But there were three different groups vying for control of the music service, and they couldn’t agree on their approach.

Consequently, the company has dropped those acquisition plans for now, and is building a music locker service instead.

IMHO, a lynchpin for ChromeOS’ success is music streaming. Specifically the streaming of songs on demand, either from your library or all libraries. A subset of either will not be enough.

Good luck w/ that music locker service google because well without licenses from the labels - it isn’t legal. Just ask MP3.com.

[note: I worked at an online music tech service provider back in the mp3.com era of the web and negotiated commercial licenses with the labels - all before my 30th birthday]
