[R]eminds me of the worst Christmas present I ever got. As a 10 year old, I hounded my parent for months leading up to Christmas for a specific BMX bike- a Diamond Back. I clipped out pictures, I called shops so they would know which had the bike in stock and I clearly spelled out the specific bike I wanted on my Christmas list that year. I woke that Christmas morning and rushed to the tree to see my new wheels. There was just one problem. In the spot my brand new Diamond Back was supposed to be placed, there sat a cheap ‘ole Huffy with a chocolate bar seat. Sure, technically it was a BMX bike but it was a huge disappointing step down from the bike I had wanted.

Sawickipedia: In my relationship with my wife, I’ve been called a little-bit of a bah humbug about gift-giving and celebrating birthdays and holidays.  And Bryce’s comment is at the heart of it.  So many times I would - like Bryce - ask for X or Y as a gift and so many times would be brutally disappointed at the result.  The cheaper copy-cat imitation like the Huffy bike Bryce mentions, “my” gift being given to my little brother instead, or not getting anything I asked for or suggested.  My parents had the absolute best intentions and to them and every other parent their choice of substitute gifts were perfectly reasonable.  And from the perspective of time, my disappointment is something that really only belongs to a kid who can’t appreciate the realities of life.  Look, I was raised well without a real care in the world and have a TON to be grateful for how raised me and what my parents have done and continue to do for me and my family today. But that all being said when I was 8, 9, 10 years old, it sucked.

And that experience colors my own thinking about my kids and the holidays. Hopefully they will appreciate my efforts.
